For those of you familiar with love, you know it feels like a warm embrace in life’s coldest moments, particularly in chilly February in Kansas City. And Candlelight is about to shower you with love at the magical Valentine’s Day special coming to the Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception.
The program includes the different facets of love explored through a number of classical music compositions. From “Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture” to Mahler’s “Symphony No. 5”, these timeless tunes explore love as both beautiful and tumultuous, showcasing its complexities, joys and challenges. Although some of them often highlight the intensity of romantic love, these love stories are all-encompassing, and portray this powerful drive in our lives as a force that can inspire greatness.
Valentine’s Day Special ft. Tchaikovsky’s” Romeo and Juliet” and More
The Candlelight Valentine’s Day special brings the works of some of the most influential classical composers in history to the Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception. As you’re surrounded by thousands of twinkling candles you’ll discover the multifaceted feeling as interpreted by Rachmaninoff, Mahler, Tchaikovsky and more notable classical composers.
Tchaikovsky’s music captured the passion, longing and turmoil associated with romantic feelings. For instance, “Romeo and Juliet” explores desire, fate and tragedy, evoking a sense of longing and showcasing the complexities of love through musical storytelling. Brahms approached love with a sense of tenderness, sincerity and intimacy. Whereas Beethoven, although he didn’t explicitly title pieces about love, his symphonies and piano sonatas reflected intense emotions and personal struggles, from fervent and triumphant to melancholic and introspective.
